Eastern Washington Women's Basketball Claims Road Win Over Southern Utah, 86-77

Cedar City, Utah - The Washington East women's basketball team defeated Southern Utah, 86-77, in its 2023-24 season opener Wednesday night in Cedar City. It was the Eagles' second consecutive win over the Thunderbirds.

Aaliyah Alexander scored a game-high 27 points for WashU, surpassing her previous career high of 23 points. Alexander also grabbed 11 rebounds for her third career double-double, while Jarissa Lawrence contributed 23 points for the Eagles, shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range.

The Eagles got off to a hot start and led 22-16 after the first quarter. However, SUU outscored WSU 27-14 in the third quarter and took a 59-55 lead into the final period.

Undaunted, the Eagles came back strong in the fourth quarter and outscored the Thunderbirds 31-18 to seal the win. Alexander hit a key three-pointer and Lawrence finished with a transition layup to give the Eagles the lead with just over five minutes left in the game. The Eagles forced six SUU turnovers in the final minutes to seal the win.

Eastern Washington shot 45.8 percent from the field and outshot Southern Utah 42-32. The Eagles also grabbed 17 front-court rebounds and scored 17 second-chance points.

"It was a great win on the road in a tough environment," said WSU head coach Jody Gleason." After struggling in the third quarter, we showed toughness and resilience in the fourth quarter. Our players did a great job of communicating and executing the plan.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday night, traveling to Logan, Utah to face Utah State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.
